Adopt-A-Highway
VTCKI maintains a 2 mile stretch of Catawba Road by picking up trash along it at least four times a year.
Animal Shelter
VTCKI sends volunteers out once each week (usually Sundays) to walk the dogs and play with the cats at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
K-grams
K-grams was started by the University of Michigan CKI in 1999 to help unite different levels of the K-family. It was originally intended that CKIer’s write to nearby K-Kids (elementary school) to help spread the word about CKI and Kiwanis. We contacted a teacher at Price’s Fork Elementary; so we write to a fifth grade class at Prices Fork Elementary School once a month instead. It is basically a pen pal program.
Lyric Theater
On Thursdays VTCKI runs the concession stand and sells tickets at the Lyric Theater. The Lyric Theater is largely run by volunteers. After you work for about 30 minutes, you get free popcorn and drinks. Best of all, you can watch that night's movie for free!
Kentland Farm Gardening
The Farms and Fields Project at Owens Food Court gets a lot of its food from the nearby Kentland Farm. VTCKI members go out once a week to help with gardening the plants that they will be eating soon after at Farms and Fields.
Prices Fork Elementary Homework Club
On every Tuesday and Thursday, we help tutor fourth and fifth graders at Price’s Fork Elementary.
Habitat for Humanity
We help our local Habitat for Humanity in Roanoke to build or take down houses for families in need.
Special Olympics
At least once a week, we go to Christiansburg and play with mentally disabled children at the bowling lane, at the swimming pool, or on the volleyball court.
Annual Projects
FEBRUARY
- The Capital District CKI Convention is usually held each February. There is always a great service project at convention. It’s a great way to do service and meet CKIers from all over the Capital District. The convention is held in various locations, and it usually has exciting events like a dance and club awards.
APRIL
- Blacksburg Easter Egg Hunt: VTCKI works with Blacksburg Parks and Recreation to organize an Easter Egg Hunt for children. Normally working with the younger children, ages toddler to 3 years, VTCKI members help out by making signs, hiding the eggs, and interacting with the children. One member dresses up as the Easter bunny and another member helps guide the bunny and be the interpreter.
- Chi Delta Alpha Service Day: Chi Delta Alpha is a service sorority that hosts a variety of service projects on their Service Day each year. VTCKI provides volunteers for many of their projects.
- Relay for Life: Virginia Tech holds a Relay for Life some weekend in April. VTCKI participates with a large group every year. We help fundraise before. Then we walk Friday night all the way until Saturday morning. This is a great bonding experience and a whole lot of fun, and it’s a way to do community service!
AUGUST
- CKI holds their annual international convention in August of each year. There is an awesome CKI Large Scale Service Project at each convention where you can meet people from all over the world!
OCTOBER
- Halloween Carnival: A Halloween alternative for the children of Blacksburg. VTCKIer dresses up in costume and works the games at the carnival.
NOVEMBER
- VTCKI Formals: We have dinner before then dance the night away in our formal wear. We always have a dance off and many other fun activities.
DECEMBER
- Blacksburg Christmas Parade: VTCKI helps to organize the floats and marchers for the parade.
- Christmas Party for Kids: Every December VTCKI plans a big party for underprivileged children in the Blacksburg Area. Club members buy presents for a child (each member is assigned a child) and each is given information about what the child likes. We also plan crafts and games for the kids. Lastly, a member dresses up as Santa Claus and hands out the presents.
