Spring 2002
We kicked off the fundraising for the scholarship in April 2002 with
our First Annual James Reed 5K Walk/Run held on the campus of Virginia
Tech. Many thanks to all who participated or donated money for the
event; it was without a doubt, a huge success! At the close of the
semester, we had raised a total of $4,000 for the scholarship.
Fall 2002
We continued to support the scholarship with a few more minor fundraisers
this past semester. The first weekend of November we held a successful
Pancake Breakfast with the support of our Kiwanis Club, raising over
$400. At the close of last semester, we raffled off a Frank Beamer
autographed football, a fundraiser that brought in almost $200. Both
have exceeded our expectations, and we hold out great hope not only
for the continued success of these events, but also for our main
fundraiser, the 5K Walk/Run!
Spring 2003
VTCKI picked up where they had left off in the Fall. During the Spring
Semester we held several fundraisers. In April we ran a concession
stand at the annual Virginia Tech football Spring Game. Later that
same month the second annual James Reed Memorial 5K was a huge success.
We finished off the semester with our annual Pizza Hut Fundraiser,
where officers work as waiters and waitresses, and club members come
and enjoy so wonderful pizza. A portion of each meal and all tips
went to the Scholarship.
Summer 2003
Members of VTCKI braved the heat for a weekend to help run the game
booths at Paramount’s Kings Dominion, with all proceeds going
to the scholarship.
Fall 2003
This was certainly one of the most exciting semesters of fundraising
yet. We worked hard running our concession stand at Lane Stadium,
during each of the VT Football teams home games. All money raised
from concessions not used for the club budget during the school year
is donated to James. In November we hosted our second Pancake Breakfast,
which was another successful event. We ended the semester by taking
on our most challenging fundraiser since running our first 5K. After
four months of planning and numerous hours of hard work, Fighting
Gravity hit the stage at Top of The Stairs to play a benefit show
in front of a crowd of close to 300 screaming Tech Students.
