History

Circle K International at Virginia Tech (VTCKI) received its official charter on June 6, 1956, and has remained an active club through the present. Circle K International and the Club of Virginia Tech opened their membership to women in 1974, making VTCKI the first co-ed service organization on Virginia Tech's campus.
Through the 1980's, VTCKI remained a strong club and took on new responsiblities such as working with James, 1984, and working with the Blacksburg Christmas Parade, 1986. In the late 80's and early 90's, the club had over 125 members, making it the largest CKI club anywhere. In the later 90's, the club has gained strong members and has become more involved in the district.
Circle K International at Virginia Tech is Sponsored by the Montgomery County - Blacksburg Kiwanis Club.

Dues

Like any organization, VTCKI does not have an unlimited supply of money to fund its projects and activities. VTCKI has two main sources of revenue: dues and fundraising. Our club dues are just $30 for a year or $20 for a semester. This money goes towards funding the expenses of the organization such as newsletters, and International and District Officer travel. Some of the dues money stays at the club level but it is not enough to fund all that our club does. To fund our socials, projects and other events, our club must hold fundraisers. The dues and fundraisers also go to scholarship funds like James Reed Memorial Scholarship.

Weekly Club Meetings

Circle K International at Virginia Tech meets once a week to discuss upcoming projects and events. Our weekly meetings are important because they keep everyone in club updated on club events and they allow us to come together and socialize. While at CKI events you will make many friends and the weekly meetings are just one way for you to keep in touch.
An important part of our weekly meetings is attendance. The attendance sheet is passed around the room at the start of the meeting. Be sure to sign your name and indicate your if you are a member or a prospective member. You are a prospective member until your induction at the end of the semester. If you arrive at the meeting late and don't get to sign attendance, then get in touch with the Recording Secretary and he/she can add you on. It is important for our club to keep accurate records of member attendance at meetings; so make sure that you sign attendance.

What usually happens at club meetings? We frequently have visitors at our meetings. Sometimes, the Kiwanians join us for our meetings. We usually introduce any visitors that we have at the beginning of the meeting. Be sure to take the time to welcome them to our meeting and to introduce yourself after the meeting.

The Sponsor-Sponsee Program

Every semester, students new to the club are paired with current members who volunteer to be a sort of guide for the new members for the semester leading up to inductions. We divide all the new members who choose to be sponsees and put them in separate teams, each led by a current member, who is now their sponsor. Each team has an incentive to take part in more projects and socials than the other teams because there's a gift card waiting for the team that does the most activities during that semester. Not only does the Sponsor-Sponsee program have a prize to look forward to in the end, but participants also create new friendships on the way, which is sometimes worth more than free food at Moe's.
