Sign-up for any of these projects by coming to meetings on Wednesday in 209 McBryde or on the Calendar.

Adopt-A-Highway:

Circle K maintains a 2 mile stretch of Catawba Road by picking up trash along it at least four times a year.

Animal Shelter:

Circle K sends volunteers out once each week (usually Fridays) to walk the dogs and play with the cats at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.

Head Start:

This is a great project for members who enjoy working with children. Once a month volunteers go to Blacksburg Head Start between 5:45-8:00 (usually 6:30-7:30)  while their parents have a meeting. Circle K sends 3-4 volunteers out once a month to help watch the children.

K-grams:

K-grams was started by the University of Michigan Circle K in 1999 to help unite different levels of the K-family. It was originally intended that Circle Ker’s write to nearby K-kids (elementary school) to help spread the word about Circle K and Kiwanis. We contacted a teacher at Price’s Fork Elementary; so we write to a fifth grade class at Prices Fork Elementary School once a month instead. It is basically a pen pal program.  At the end of the year we host a picnic with them and meet our pen pals.

Lyric Theater:

On Thursdays Circle K runs the concession stand and sells tickets. The Lyric Theater is largely run by volunteers. After you work for about 30 minutes, you get free popcorn and drinks and can go watch the movie for free.

Prices Fork Gardening:

Each grade level in the school has a small plot of land that they garden in the courtyard of the school. This is used as a teaching tool for the classes. Plus, it gives students and opportunity to build camaraderie and work together. Circle K helps to maintain it in the off-season by mowing and weeding.

Prices Fork Elementary Homework Club:

On every Tuesday and Thursday, we help tutor fourth and fifth graders at Price’s Fork Elementary.

Books of Hope

In September, we help make book s for underprivileged kids in other countries.

Habitat for Humanity

Once a month, we help our local habitat for humanity build or take down houses for families in need.

Claytor Lake Cleanup

We travel together to Claytor Lake once every other month and help cleanup anything from their beach to their sidewalks. If we go enough times, we get to camp out there for a retreat.

---- Annual Projects ----

FEBRUARY

  • Special Olympics: Unified Sports is an exciting program that brings together athletes with and without mental retardation in a setting where all are challenged to improve their skills. Participants develop friendships and an understanding of each other's capabilities through a spirit of equality and team unity. All leagues need players and officials. All ability levels are welcome! There are several different programs that this office organizes. Programs are a cooperative effort of the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department, NRVAPMR (Leisure Directions) and Special Olympics.  We usually help out with their Hoops Tournament.
  • The Capital District Circle K Convention is usually held each February. There is always a great service project at convention. It’s a great way to do service and meet Circle Kers from all over the Capital District. The convention is held in various locations, and it usually has exciting events like a dance and club awards.

APRIL

  • Blacksburg Easter Egg Hunt: Circle K works with Blacksburg Parks and Recreation to organize an Easter Egg Hunt for children. Normally working with the younger children, ages toddler to 3 years, Circle K members help out by making signs, hiding the eggs, and interacting with the children. One member dresses up as the Easter bunny and another member helps guide the bunny and be the interpreter.
  • Chi Delta Alpha Service Day: Chi Delta Alpha is a service sorority that hosts a variety of service projects on their Service Day each year. Circle K provides volunteers for many of the projects.
  • Relay for Life: Virginia Tech holds a Relay for Life some weekend in April. Circle K participates with a large group every year. We help fundraise before. Then we walk Friday night all the way until Saturday morning. This is a great bonding experience and a whole lot of fun, and it’s a way to do community service!

AUGUST

  • CKI holds their annual international convention in August of each year. There is an awesome Circle K Project at each convention where you can meet people from all over the world!

OCTOBER

  • Penny Carnival: A Halloween alternative for the children of Blacksburg. Circle K dresses up in costume and works the games at the carnival.

NOVEMBER

  • Capital District Formals: Virginia Tech Circle K hosts the Capital District formals.  We have dinner before then dance the night away in our formal wear. We always have a dance off and many other fun activities.

DECEMBER

  • Blacksburg Christmas Parade: Circle K helps to organize the floats and marchers for the parade.
  • Christmas Party for Kids: Every December Circle K plans a big party for underprivileged children in the Blacksburg Area. Circle K members buy presents for a child (each student is assigned a child) and each is given information about what the child likes. We also plan crafts and games for the kids. Lastly, a Circle K'er dresses up as Santa Claus and hands out the presents.
